Sculpture and Design

For several years I have worked on a series of ceramic figurative sculptures. These works are unglazed, monochromatic, hollow built stoneware. I do not work from models. Two questions that I am frequently asked are, "Who are these people?" and "Where do they come from?"

They probably evolve from bits and pieces of visual memory -- composite images of people, faces, expressions and gestures that I have observed and stored away. The figures are often older, weighty, and, somehow, isolated even when in a group. They probably reflect my love for the rounded, full figured forms found in Pre-Columbian art, of which I saw a great deal as a child. There is no doubt that my work is also influenced by my observations of relationships between people, by both the value and the indignities of aging, as well as that ever present awareness that life is truly ironic. Interestingly, as I get older, my work becomes, perhaps, a little more lighthearted, but certainly a little more autobiographical (although these sculptures are in no way self portraits). I can only expect that as you view my work, you will relate to it in a unique and individual way, recognizing people, situations and emotions that are familiar to your life and your experiences.

To compliment my figurative sculpture, which is primarily monochromatic and meticulously attentive to detail (each sculpture taking months to complete), I also design ceramic jewelry, pottery and furniture. This process opens the door to a great deal of experimentation with color, surface and design. Because each of these smaller pieces can be completed far more rapidly than the sculptures, it allows for creativity and new ideas to percolate constantly, influencing all of my work in innovative new ways.
